Coaching and Playing History: (excerpt from LIUA magazine interview)

John Calabria began his lacrosse playing career at Sachem High School where he achieved (ALL-COUNTY) Honors playing attack.  From there he received a full athletic scholarship for lacrosse to attend Adelphi University where he was awarded (ALL-AMERICAN) Honors, helping Adelphi win the Division II College National Championship in 1993 and also awarded Team MVP.

After graduating, John's coaching career began as an offensive coordinator at Adelphi University where he helped coach the offense to another NCAA Division II National Championship in 1995. Next up was the Head Coaching job at Queens College. Both these college positions gave Coach Calabria extensive experience in coaching and developing players as well as acquiring the background needed for helping advise student-athletes on all aspects of college recruiting.
Calabria continues his career on the sidelines as head coach for the Syosset High School Lacrosse Program.  Since March 2000 he has guided Syosset to the playoffs each and every year making it all the way to the NYS Championship Game in 2008. John also earned the 2007 & 2008 'Nassau County Coach of The Year' as well as the overall 'Long Island Coach of the Year'.

Coach Calabria is a Social Studies teacher at Syosset High School giving him a good perspective of the young student-athlete's ability to understand and internalize all phases of the game. He has coached and played lacrosse at both the high school and college levels bringing enthusiasm and a very high intensity to the playing field each and every day throughout his career.
"In my 10 seasons as Head Coach at Syosset, I have not stood alone on the sidelines. The experience and knowledge my associate coaches bring to the Varsity level allows me a great deal of freedom to address team and game situations with the players and the plays I think may need special attention. I can bounce from one end of the field to the other because I have full faith that either of those guys can handle their end of the field exceptionally well. The true beneficiaries of us having two great assistant coaches are our players. They’re getting coached and taught aspects of the game in ways they have never had before."

Coach Calabria stated he has always looked for the following things from his coaches; love of the game, high lacrosse IQ, strong work ethic, and professional mannerisms with an understanding that as a coach, you must value the whole experience that your players are experiencing, in the classroom and on the field.
"
I am fortunate to have outstanding coaches at all grades who have those characteristics and believe in this philosophy.  Throughout the years we are proud in having both All-American Lacrosse Players and All-American Academic Student-Athletes come through our system, with several of our teams earning the New York State Scholar Athlete Award, given to the highest team scholastic average of any lacrosse team in New York State."

"Our teams excel both on the playing field and in the classroom and I could not be more proud of that fact."
